Happy Birthday OpenStack. The cloud is about to get some real innovation. Can you change the source code of your cloud? If not, why do you enjoy being locked in?

Today marks the 3rd Anniversary of Openstack. In this mini-documentary we hear from some of the founders and early contributors to Openstack as they look back to the initial collaboration and reflect on the joining of like-minded developers and technologists that ignited the Openstack open-source movement.

I am at an offsite in Jackson Hole. What do we do?...

Published

I am at an offsite in Jackson Hole. What do we do? Yossi Vardi and John Maeda (head of RISD, famous design school) and I are showing each other fun stuff, like this lipdub that Grand Rapids did to promote the town. What's funny is neither is on Facebook. So, Yossi asked me "why would I be on Facebook?"

I answer "to show people stuff like this."

He then asks me "how many Israelis read you?" I say "I have no idea."

So, if you are Israeli and reading me, leave a comment about why Yossi should join Facebook.

This film is dedicated to the late Roger Ebert, who died at the age of 70, on April 4th, 2013. Ebert loved movies and even named our LipDub, "The Greatest Music Video Ever Made."

I can't disagree. This startup, Numecent, has some pretty mind-blowing cloud-based technology to deliver apps to you without forcing you to download the entire app. Think of things like Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Office, Autodesk's CAD software, etc.

Here founder Osman Kent tells me what's behind this very interesting technology. Learn more at http://www.numecent.com/

Microsoft misses estimates and writes down $900M on Surface RT

I think the news is going to get worse for Microsoft. Xbox1 is the one product I'm watching. If it doesn't do well, then I'm not sure what Microsoft will do to stem the bad news as the Age of Context arrives over the next 18 months.

Google is about to announce stuff that really will take away Microsoft's position in mobile. I feel for my friends at Microsoft, but they are gonna get squeezed in a way that hasn't happened to Microsoft in its life.

Google's Q2 2013 earnings come in light on revenue and profit

Published

Google's profits are gonna be stagnant for several quarters.

Why? Advertising is tapped out and we're moving to mobile where advertising just doesn't work all that well. Google's innovations (Google Glass, Driverless Cars, Contextual OS's) won't bear fruit for at least four more quarters (and the big structural changes won't happen for years -- I sense that Larry Page is moving Google from an advertising business to a transactional one).

Why move to a transactional business? Because advertising is going to be a VERY HARD business model to make work in mobile.

If Google can move to contextual and transactional it will win, and win big, but the next four to seven quarters will be bumpy.

That said, Google is best positioned for the next age and is the most innovative big company, by far, that I'm watching right now (heck, it's more innovative than most startups I track).

Being an investor right now is tough. If you had $1,000 which one would you invest in: Google or Microsoft?

For me the answer is easy: Google all the way.

The Landscape of Social Login & Sharing: Consumers Want Choice « Gigya's Blog

Published

Who is winning the social login war? Facebook is, so far. This will be interesting to watch over time, I bet Google and Facebook take more and more share over time. Does this matter?

It does in the Age of Context. The logins we choose are the brands we trust to represent us to others. That's who will get the data about us to bring us new, automatic, features (think of things like Google Now).

Bipartisan Backlash Grows Against Domestic Surveillance

It looks like I was wrong about this story. I didn't think our officials would roll back spying programs after watching what happened to gun legislation.

Snowden deserves a prize for the change he enacted in our government. It shows that one person can, indeed, change the world.

I love this photo of my three kids and Maryam Ghaemmaghami Scoble. Little Ryan's face, in front, is just priceless. By the way, Patrick Scoble was always unwilling to go on rides like this until he was goaded by a girl to go on one. Seems like he's enjoying them now. Milan, who is autistic, LOVES badass rides.

We had a great time at Knott's Berry Farm. Now home.

Tomorrow I'm gonna be in a dunk tank for charity at Candlestick Park (in the evening). That should make for some fun pictures, although I'm not gonna wear Google Glass. Might wear a GoPro, though! Rocky Barbanica is gonna be there trying to get me dunked, I'm sure!
