Why Oh Why Did Apple Abandon Cat Names For OS X?

Published

Go Apple: Half Moon Bay surfing spots beat cats anytime. ;-0

Not to mention that Apple exec Phil Schiller lives in Half Moon Bay. Mavericks is famous big-wave surf spot here. I'm sure he had something to do with that.

Half Moon Bay is becoming quite a backwater tech town. Rackspace's Cloud app was written in the Peet's here by Michael Mayo. Several Google execs and geeks live here. Lots of tech companies have offsites here.

Next week Bloomberg West will have its first futuristic tech conference at the Ritz by my house.

The Google Glass video that was shown at last year's IO was filmed at the Ritz Pool here.

GoPro was started here. Steve Jurvetson, who funded Hotmail and many other crazy startups, owns a home here.

Soon we'll do some events here. I hear Halley Suitt Tucker's book is coming out, so we might throw a party in August.

If you come by Half Moon Bay, let us know. Friday afternoons we're often at the Ritz with a bunch of interesting technologists having fun talking about the future. Increasingly it'll show up, too. A next door neighbor, for instance, helps run the Google Chrome team and he brought a Pixel Chromebook out before anyone had seen them.

Apple made me a little jealous (I still have mostly Macs at home and still am an iPad fan). But Google's openness is bringing me features and experiences that Apple didn't match today (while it did show stuff that others don't yet do, like keep thieves from using my devices).

What this really means is:

1. Apple's profits are safe. If you have an iPhone, this makes you feel good and you aren't likely to dump over and get an Android.
2. Apple's influencers are safe. I spoke to lots of audiences lately and the tech passionates are HEAVILY iPhone, even in Europe.
3. This effectively locks Microsoft and Blackberry out of the market (and the new Firefox and Tienzen OS's). The Apple announcements make those seem lame and continue the Google and Apple world against everyone else.
4. I still think Google Glass is a bigger threat to Apple than it understands.

More on all this on Gillmor Gang shortly at http://friendfeed.com/stevegillmor This will be a short show, gotta end by 12:45.

Robert Scoble - Google+ - Longer look at Umoove: face/eye tracking Yesterday I put…

A more in-depth look at Umoove so you can see why its face/eye tracking is a game changer.

Will Apple announce anything as interesting today? I'll be watching and we'll have a Gillmor Gang at noon to discuss if it came up to the bar that this Israeli startup has set.

By the way, the Apple keynote will be live streamed at 10 a.m. (rare, since Apple usually doesn't do live streaming of its press events).

Thanks Hillel Fuld for connecting us again.

Edward Snowden has blown the whistle on this presidency. You have to wonder: Will Obama see out...

Published

Yup, I was wrong.

This story has a chance of totally making Apple's announcements this week look very boring indeed and due to what Edward Snowden has said about what the NSA is doing this story is going to become Obama's defining legacy, even if he survives.

It's clear that I've been on the wrong side of this story, but I'll live with the consequences of my actions too.

Obama's Presidency is definitely going to be tested by this. The responses to my "hero or traitor" question earlier shows most of the public thinks he's a hero.

Wow.

Will Apple ship Umoove's face and eye tracking? This stuff blows away what Samsung put in the Galaxy S4.

Thanks to Hillel Fuld who hooked me up. He's been telling me for months that I better see this. It's amazing, must watch.

Oh, and I shot this video on my Google Glass. I'll have a more "pro" video up soon so you can compare Glass to a professional camcorder that cost me $4,000. I think Glass comes in very well.

This video will be a family treasure of mine. It captures the moment where my three-year-old son sees the future for the first time: eye and face tracking is going to make TONS of apps better. Mike McCue think about how you'd use this in Flipboard!

Marc Andreessen you should invest in this company.

Hero or traitor?

I think a little bit of both. How about you?
